One of the few things reliably known about the writer who published as B Traven is that he died on March 27, 1969 in Mexico.  This photo from 1926 is the only one believed with any certainty to show the man himself.

DJ Gumshoe will be subbing for Ed this week, and we thank him. We'll put aside our normal format this week to preview two shows happening tonight in Davis.

We're expecting in-studio performances by artists also appearing later at a house show hosted by our own Drag Queen of Hearts. MountShout, The Shants, and Ash Reiter are on tonight's bill. Listen up for live Americana-tinged indie and folk today on Cactus Corners.

And elsewhere in town tonight, KDVS Presents Caroliner at 8 pm at John Natsoulas Center for the Arts. Also on the bill are Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet and KDVS dj aggregations Mucky the Ducky and Mama Buries.

Belgian composer Wim Mertens, now 63 years old, has been composing music since around 1980, with more than 50 classical albums under his belt, keeping to a consistently minimalist and often hypnotic sound centered around his talents as a pianist. Today we'll be featuring some songs by Mr. Mertens from the various albums he's put out over the years, mostly issued by the now hibernating Les Disques du Crepuscule record label in Belgium.

By the way, that's not a female singing, surprisingly, that's Wim!

We were pre-empted on January 16th for building repairs.  Today we'll feature the music of British composer and double bassist Gavin Bryars that we'd planned to present then.

Bryars, born January 16, 1943, has worked with other giants of British music, some best known for contributions outside the field of art music. We'll feature their music as well.

Note:  The photo depicts Cactus Corners in October 1939.  Thanks to Curtis Carroll for the image.

British composer and double bassist Gavin Bryars was born this day in 1943.  A founder of the Portsmouth Sinfonia, he is also known for his composition Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet.

The KDVS studios are scheduled to be dark from 8 am to 2 pm.  If we return to the air before the scheduled time, we'll be sitting in with Professor Corrigan until our regular show time.  Listen for R&B and soul music from our misspent youths.
